Set for August 17, 2025, Nitty Gritty returns to Red Lodge Mountain with its signature "low key, high elevation" ethos. The race features a 26.2‑mile solo marathon (6 laps), a 13.1‑mile half marathon (3 laps), and a 4.3‑mile Hot Lap—each lap climbing around 1,150 ft (≈350 m) over a rugged mix of dirt roads, singletrack trails, and even some bushwhacking. Runners may also form relay teams of 2–6 to tackle the marathon collectively. The course changes each year and demands bear spray, personal hydration (no aid stations on-course), and good navigation skills. Organizers allow dogs on- or off-leash, provided they're well-behaved. After the race, participants gather at the basecamp, enjoying snacks, beverages, local camaraderie, and celebratory vibes miles above sea level. With rustic charm, challenging terrain, and a fun-loving runner community, Nitty Gritty continues to define bold trail racing in Montana.
