The Westenergie Marathon – Rund um den Baldeneysee is Germany’s oldest continuously held marathon, welcoming runners each second Sunday in October for an autumn celebration of endurance and community by the beautiful Baldeneysee in Essen. In 2025, the 63rd edition will take place on Sunday, 12 October, with all races starting and finishing at the scenic Seaside Beach venue. Participants can choose between the full 42.195 km marathon, the rewarding 18.6 km Westenergie Seerunde that circles the lake once, or the spirited AllbauTeamStaffel relay where teams of four split the marathon distance—making the event a perfect fit for solo competitors, relay teams, and families alike. Organized entirely by the TUSEM Essen Athletics Department and enriched by a pre-event Walking Day and Mini-Marathon for kids, it blends tradition, volunteer spirit, and a festive, inclusive atmosphere.
