On 28 February, runners gather at Cape Vincent Recreation Park and begin their challenge along the icy shores of the St. Lawrence River, heading out to the historic Tibbetts Point Lighthouse before turning back. The 10K covers one lap, the half marathon two laps and the full marathon four laps of the same flat, paved course. The event features hot-shower facilities, indoor warming space, roaring outdoor fires and music at the finish. Finishers receive a t-shirt and medal, and those completing the full marathon earn the coveted “DENFIT Spear”. With a total event cap of 200 runners and only 100 allowed in the full marathon, places are limited. Lights or strobes are mandatory due to possible white-out conditions, and organisers emphasise that the race will go ahead no matter the weather (unless a state travel ban is in effect).
