Every year, Les Foulées du Gois turn the tidal causeway of the Passage du Gois into a one-of-a-kind running arena where athletes literally race the sea. The 2026 programme on 20 June includes Course 1 Enfants 900 m, Course 3 Jeunes 2400 m, Course 2 Marée Descendante 8000 m, Course 4 Pop Hommes 8000 m, Course 6 Pop Femmes 8000 m, Course 5 Sport Adapté 8000 m, and the headline Course 7 Marée Montante (course des As) 4.1 km against the rising tide. Most races start and finish on the Beauvoir-sur-Mer side with an out-and-back over the 4.15 km Gois causeway, while the elite tide race sets off from Barbâtre on Noirmoutier and finishes on the mainland as water begins to cover the road. The terrain is flat, paved and fully exposed, crossing a submersible road between sea and mudflats, which makes footing, wind and the timing of the tide just as important as speed. With around 2,000 runners, 250 volunteers and a festival atmosphere built around this fragile stretch of coast, Les Foulées du Gois remain one of Europe’s most unusual and spectacular road-running events.
